We began 'Baby Beats' 4 years ago to fill the need for an inexpensive, safe and supportive social space for parents and their toddlers. We had a room, a couple of mums with a reportoire of lullabies and nursery rhymes who could sing, and a bunch of babies! Beginning with these invaluable resources, we made our own drums from formula tins, tied ribbons to plastic rings, put some rice in plastic bottles for instruments of creative expression and then advertised! Requiring a name and a logo in a hurry, one of the Dads came up with 'Baby Beats' and I put together a logo- some paddle pop sticks and pompoms photographed and edited on Powerpoint. The group has grown and blessed many young families. I have since moved interstate, but my daughter now goes to 'Baby Beats' with my grandbaby. The benefits are socio-emotional, intellectual, physical and spiritual: language development, rhythm and beat, singing, sharing, co-operation, self discipline, confidence, creative expression and happy play. Parents receive much needed connection and a sense of community. Culture and values are passed on in this environment, both through nursery rhymes and spiritual songs, but also through an educational theme focus for each term.
